Best Nose Cleaner For 2019: Our Top Picks Of The Year

More than 5 million people suffer from sinus problems each year. “Sinusitis,” one of the most common of these problems, happens when the sinus gets inflamed. Coughs, congestion, and other problems associated with the common cold or allergies can cause it. But a nose cleaner might be able to help resolve all this and more.

When you feel stuffed up and congested, it often seems like there’s nothing to do but wait it out — and hope it doesn’t develop into something worse, like sinusitis. As people say, “There’s no cure for the common cold.” While that might be true, there are ways you can treat the symptoms.

The next time you feel stuffiness coming on, what if you could reach for a solution? Today’s popular nose cleaner products promise to help flush out that stuffiness and all the discomfort that comes with it.

What Does A Nose Cleaner Do?

A nose cleaner, also known as a nasal irrigation system, flushes out the clogs in your nasal passageways. It helps restore your breathing, voice, and sense of smell to normal, as well as relieving the uncomfortable pressure, pain, and itchiness that sometimes comes with congestion.

A saline solution (saline is just salt water) and a contraption to get that solution through your nasal passageways are all a nose cleaner uses. They can also help combat the dryness you might get in your nasal passageways when you’re in dry indoor spaces, such as a home with a radiator.

Basically, you pour the solution into a single nostril, and it makes its way to the other nostril, where the water comes out along with the gunk that was clogging up your nose. That also helps flush out the allergens that get into your nasal passageways and trigger allergies.

Who Should Use A Nose Cleaner?

Do Nose Cleaners Really Work?

Are These Products Safe To Use?

Nose Cleaning Methods

All nose cleaners use the same concept: flush out the nose with saline solution. However, the delivery method varies depending on which device you choose. The most basic methods involve manually powered devices. These devices often look like long-handled teapots. You can also use a bulb syringe as a manual nose cleaner, but the learning curve can be more difficult with these since they’re not expressly for the nose.

You’ll also see nose cleaners powered by batteries or electricity. These devices use power to propel the saline solution through your nose. In short, nose cleaning methods range from low-tech to high-tech. You might have to try a few before you settle on the right one for you.

Nose Cleaner Prices

The price of a nose cleaner varies depending on how elaborate the device is. Basic, manually powered kits that don’t come with much more than the device itself may only cost about $$ to $$. For a fancier starter kit that also includes the ingredients for your saline solution, the price runs up to about $$. However, an electric kit that includes everything you need can cost $$$ or more.

The more expensive nasal irrigation systems don’t necessarily work better. However, some people may find them easier to use.

How To Choose The Best Nose Cleaner

The best nose cleaner for you is the one that you feel most comfortable using. All of them will flush your sinuses out effectively if used correctly. However, you might get more powerful results from an electric- or battery-powered device. We recommend starting with an inexpensive, basic model, and graduating up to something fancier if the first one doesn’t do what you need.

How We Reviewed

On this list, we’ve included nasal cleaning systems of all different styles and price points. To review each one, we considered the features it comes with, as well as what consumers have to say about using it. We’ve also included pros and cons so you can get a truly balanced look at each model.

The Best Nose Cleaners of 2019

With such a wide variety of nasal irrigators on the market, it can be hard to narrow down the list. We've done the work for you: here are the top nose cleaners of 2019, from high-tech to ultra-simple.

Navage Nasal Hygiene Essentials Bundle: Navage Nose Cleaner, 50...
  • Your NOSE is the body’s AIR FILTER. Now you can clean it daily with easy-to-use Naväge!
  • Naväge uses POWERED SUCTION to FLUSH OUT dangerous germs, allergens, and mucus. You’ll love that clean-nose feeling!
  • For fast, all-natural relief from allergies and sinus congestion – WITHOUT DRUGS! Naväge operates only with genuine...

The Navage system is the Cadillac of nose cleaners. This device uses suction power to pump saline into your nasal passages, and then suck it back out. For some people, this might feel less gross than just letting the dirty saline water run out of your nostril and into the sink. You’ll find this for $$ to $$$ at retailers like Amazon.

Amazon reviewers gave this system 4.1 out of 5 stars. It has some impressive features, such as the easy-to-use SaltPods for making your saline solution, as well as a stand to store it on your countertop easily.

Many reviewers note that they had better success with this model than with more basic nose cleaning systems. However, some have also said that it feels strange at first and that you might have to experiment with your technique before you can get it to work well.

NeilMed Sinus Rinse - A Complete Sinus Nasal Rinse Kit, 50 packets
  • A Volume Therapeutic Saline Nasal Ir
  • A volume, therapeutic, saline nasal irrigation & moisturizing system
  • Soothing, pH balanced, isotonic solution with no burning or stinging

For a more simple solution, the NeliMed kit might be the perfect choice. This kit uses a simple, manually powered bottle with premixed saline packets so you can easily get the right ratio of salt to water. It sells for $ to $$ on Amazon.

Although it’s basic, the NeliMed system has an impressive 4.5 out of 5 Amazon stars. Reviewers note that as long as you use enough force to power the water through your nose, it really works. In fact, the only drawback seems to be that it’s not very comfortable to use. However, any nasal irrigator is going to feel strange, especially at first.

NeilMed Sinugator Cordless Pulsating Nasal Wash Kit with One...
  • Dry the device after each use
  • Do not wash the device under running water like the use of an electric tooth brush
  • Preservative, drug, iodine, BPA, gluten and latex free

The same brand, NeliMed, also makes a fancier version of a nose cleaner. The “Sinugator”uses battery power to pulse the saline into your nose, and also comes with some premixed saline packets. It retails on Amazon for $$ to $$.

Amazon’s customer reviews give the Sinugator 3.4 out of 5 stars. People love it for being easy to use and highly effective. However, one significant drawback is the lack of durability. Many users have found that their device will die after a certain amount of time, and even new batteries can’t revive it.

  • âś… Lasts a lifetime | Unlike plastic, our ceramic neti pot will keep your sinuses clear year after year.

One of the worst things about a nose cleaner is the uncomfortable feeling of forcing water through your nasal passages. Can a device called “ComfyPot” make the process feel better? This ceramic pot uses a silicone tip that won’t feel uncomfortable when you put it in your nose. It’s also ergonomically designed, so you can easily position it correctly. It retails for just $$ to $$ on Amazon.

With 4.6 out of 5 Amazon stars, the ComfyPot sounds promising. The first benefit: it’s much prettier than other nose cleaners. The sleek ceramic design actually won’t look terrible on your shelf.

The ceramic also makes it durable, and easy to clean. Since there's nothing to feed, there’s nothing that can break or “die” inside it. Most reviewers note that it’s simple, comfortable, and effective. However, some find holding it difficult, since the heat from the water can transfer to the ceramic handle.

The Himalayan Institute offers another manual nose cleaner made of porcelain. Although not marketable with comfort specifically in mind, it’s a good basic model for those just getting used to the nose cleaner idea. You’ll find this one on Amazon for $$ to $$.

The low price is certainly a benefit of this pot, which has 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon. While many reviewers state that it does the job, some note that it’s heavy and can be uncomfortable to handle and that it’s also prone to spills.

Aromatic Salt Premium Ceramic Neti Pot, Green

Sticking something up your nose sounds just a bit more enticing when it has “aromatic” in the name. This ceramic pot competes with models like the Himalayan Institute’s because it’s simple and inexpensive. It also sells for $$ to $$ on Amazon.

Reviewers awarded this nose cleaner 4.6 out of 5 stars. Many of them love that the ceramic is easy to clean, and that it’s pretty to look at. However, some reviewers don’t love the design. It’s also easy to spill if you aren’t careful, and the spout’s angle may not pour water out fast enough to clean some people’s sinuses.

If using a nose cleaner feels like torture, this gentle option might do the trick instead. The Nasopure Neti Pot uses manual power from a plastic bottle and comes with a kit of salt packets. You can buy it for $$ to $$ on Amazon.

On Amazon, this device has 4.0 out of 5 stars. Instead of trying to fit the long handle of a teapot-shaped device in your nose, this system uses a simple plastic bottle that’s easy to position and use.

People who felt pain using traditional neti pot systems liked this method much better. They also state that it’s very easy to get good results with this device. In fact, as long as you use it correctly, this nose cleaner doesn’t seem to have any drawbacks at all.

Squip Nasal Rinsing System, One Color, No Flavor, 1 Count

  • Syringe delivery system allows user to controls the flow and pressure of the saline solution for optimum comfort and...
  • Patented technology with silicone tip/applicator to allow for an easy and gentle rinsing experience.

Finally, this Squip system offers a different take on a manually powered nose cleaner. You’ll use the syringe-like device to squeeze water into the nasal passages. It also comes with salt packets to make saline with. You can buy it for $ to $$.

This device has 4.5 out of 5 Amazon stars. Many reviewers note that it’s effective because you can control how fast or slow the water comes out. It can offer more pressure than the ceramic pot systems do, and it’s still easy to use and clean. However, the plunger can become more difficult to push over time, so you may need to replace the device more often than some others on this list.

Which Nose Cleaner Is Best For You?

Using a nose cleaner is a very personal experience, and the best type of nose cleaner is also a very personal choice. With so many different devices on the market, how can you choose the best one?

As mentioned above, it’s best to start small and work your way up to the pricier options. The most basic kits have some of the highest reviews on this list. If we had to pick a favorite, it would be the Squip system. It’s very affordable, but works to remove difficult nasal clogs.

Of course, you might find that another system works better for you. But no matter what, we’re confident that at least one device on this list will give you the results you want. Are you ready to invest in cleaner nasal passages, or does the idea sound intimidating? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

Of course, whenever you are considering exposing your body to anything new, you should talk to a doctor. So be sure to factor his or her opinion into your decision making process.

Best Cleanse Methods & Products For 2019: Lung Cleanse

Anatomy of a human that showing a lung

A lung cleanse will help you breathe easier if you've had respiratory problems. It's a sticky subject to be sure, but there's no pretty way to say phlegm. All kidding aside though, life is a struggle if we can't manage a deep breath. Consequently, lung vitality is as essential as having a strong heart and an alert mind. Indeed, healthy lungs keep your other organs functioning properly by providing life-giving oxygen. So, you can see why it's important to take care of this vital organ.

When I quit smoking, I couldn't believe the release of mucus from my lungs. It was disgusting and a huge relief. I hadn't taken a deep breath for years, but I didn't realize what I was missing until my lungs had an opportunity to do their job.

Lung and respiratory problems are complex and potentially life-threatening issues. This article explores options for a lung cleanse. It is not medical advice. So, if you are concerned about the health of your lungs or have trouble breathing, consult your doctor immediately.

What Can I Do to Promote Clear Lungs?

You've heard it before, but if you're still smoking, it's time to quit. Cigarettes are hazardous to lung health because nicotine constricts blood vessels and limits oxygen flow. Cilia line our lungs and remove foreign particles from them so they can do their job. Smoking prevents the cilia from working. But once you quit smoking, they come back to life, and that's when you cough up all the phlegm that's been inhibiting your breathing. Lungs can heal themselves, which means that even if you've been a smoker, you can help your lungs by quitting now. The longer you inhale smoke, smog, or other pollutants, the more challenging it is to flush the toxins out of your system. There's no time like the present to start a lung cleanse by stopping the smoking habit.

Pay Attention to the Air, Indoors and Outside

Smoking isn't the only thing that causes our lungs to work harder than they should. A lung cleanse could be as simple as paying attention to the air quality in your home.

Dust, pet dander, and chemicals used in cleaning all affect the condition of the air we breathe inside the house. There are things we can do to make our environment more lung-friendly. Sorry to say, it involves housework. But your lungs will thank you for taking the time to vacuum, dust, and mop. Don't use bleach or other chemicals; instead, opt for natural cleaners that are more friendly to the respiratory system. Choose products that are non-aerosol and fragrance-free for a breath of fresh air, indoors.

Humidity wreaks havoc on inside air quality too. Do regular maintenance to make sure there are no leaks encouraging mold to grow. Combat humidity by using a dehumidifier, of course, but also by running the fan on your stove while you're cooking. Better yet, use live plants to purify the air inside.

Outside air quality hazards

Pollution makes outdoor air quality difficult on the lungs. When the air is dangerously polluted, particles are visible, making the air look as heavy as it is to breathe. Heavy particle pollution is particularly dangerous to those who already have limited lung capacity, like young children, older adults, and you guessed it, smokers.

Wildfires cause problems too, degrading the oxygen in the air. Smoke makes breathing conditions hazardous not only where the fires are burning, but for hundreds of miles away as the smoke fills the atmosphere. A lung cleanse is necessary for people who breathe in smoke from the wildfires. Check the air quality index in your area and heed the warnings when you're advised to stay inside.

Drinking lots of water is vital for a lung cleanse if you've breathed in smoke from wildfires. The particle-filled smoke gets trapped in your lungs and moves through the bloodstream, potentially causing damage to your organs. Flush the contaminants from your lungs by increasing the normal 10 8-ounce glasses of water a day up to 12 to 14 glasses.

How Can Herbs Help a Lung Cleanse?

When cilia are doing their work, they flow together like little waves that create a current to remove impurities from the body. But blood vessels constrict from smoke and pollution, and as a result, cilia aren't able to move the way they should. Hot liquids can help get the cilia going again to loosen phlegm, which will aid in ridding the lungs of toxins.

Steep slippery elm and marshmallow root in hot water to drink as a tea that will support, lubricate, and relax the tissues in your throat and lungs.

There are a wide variety of herbs that will aid in a lung cleanse. For example, eucalyptus acts as an expectorant that eases coughing and upper respiratory congestion. It contains antioxidants that help strengthen the immune system when your body needs to fight off infection from a cold or flu. You can purchase this herbal remedy over the counter as a supplement, a therapeutic tea, and a variety of cough and cold formulas. Eucalyptus also comes as an essential oil, which is highly concentrated and should never be taken orally or put on the skin without being diluted.

Much like eucalyptus, peppermint oil acts as an expectorant that helps clear upper respiratory congestion. You can find it used as a natural balm to rub on the chest. Inhaling the vapors helps to cut through congestion. Unlike antihistamines, peppermint doesn't cause drowsiness. It does the opposite. Peppermint lifts the spirit and gives you energy even while you're using it as a lung cleanse. Peppermint is also abundant in nutrients including phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and calcium that fight off germs and toxins.

This cooking spice contains carvacrol and rosmarinic acid, which inhibit bacterial growth and are natural decongestants. Oregano oil is packed with antioxidants and contains vitamins A, C, and E complex, as well as the minerals zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, copper, manganese, and niacin. It helps relieve congestion, calms sensitivities to environmental irritants, slows cell deterioration, and also works as an antihistamine.

Curcumin is the powerful antioxidant in turmeric that blocks inflammation and fights oxidative stress in the lungs. Studies indicate that curcumin inhibits the activity of a protein called nuclear factor-kappa B, the culprit behind inflammation in the lungs. It also appears it has the same effect on cancerous cells. Findings suggest that turmeric works as a natural anti-inflammatory to treat respiratory inflammation. You can take it as a supplement or drink it in a tea.

Food to Activate and Protect Your Lungs

Mucus build-up is a problem that causes respiratory infections and affects our lungs' capacity to distribute oxygen. Mother nature provides a variety of foods that naturally break down phlegm so that the lungs can get rid of it a lot easier.

If you can take the heat, peppers are one food you should try for a lung cleanse. They work as a natural decongestant and are rich in beta-carotene as well as antioxidants. Studies indicate that they may aid in the prevention of the growth of cancer cells. Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower are all part of a family known as cruciferous vegetables. They help detoxify the body and boost our immune system with antioxidants like vitamin C. Ultimately, a healthy immune system is the best way to protect your lungs.

Oranges are full of nutrients, enzymes, and antioxidants that fight free radicals. The peel is packed with natural histamine suppressors too, which is excellent news for people who have allergies. Histamine reduces irritation, making orange peels an outstanding source for a lung cleanse.

Rejuvenate with These Lung Cleanse Recipes

Preparing for a lung cleanse can be a time-consuming affair. Or, it can be as simple as making little changes to the ingredients you cook with along with adding breakfast smoothies. Whatever you choose, be intentional, and notice the changes in your overall health. As oxygen flow increases, so will your stamina and most likely, your mood.

Lung cleanse with a refreshing smoothie

Try a combination of lemons, oranges, and pineapple to reduce inflammation and help control coughing. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which causes a natural lung cleanse. Add peppermint to soothe and relax the respiratory system. This easy-to-make smoothie works to stimulate your lungs and help ease your breathing when you're congested. Give your lungs a hand and whip up this lung cleanse smoothie.

Try the Lung Institue's "Love Your Lungs Juice" to combat particle pollution. Cilantro helps remove the heavy metals, and carrots have natural sodium that helps rid the body of carbon dioxide. Carrots are also full of vitamin A. Add some ginger to improve circulation and reduced congestion, and you have a smoothy that will make your lungs breathe happily.

Exercise for Strong Lungs

Your body uses more oxygen and produces more carbon dioxide during exercise. So your breathing naturally increases from around 15 times per minute up to as much as 40 to 60 times per minute. And your circulation escalates to take in as much oxygen as possible. Of all the lung cleanse options that we've explored, exercise may be the single most important habit to implement for healthy lungs.

Exercise forces our lungs to distribute oxygen throughout the body, so our muscles have enough energy to keep up with the escalated exertion. Oxygen replaces carbon dioxide as we exercise, giving our muscles the energy they need. When you exercise, it forces your lungs to work out as much as it does the muscles that you're targeting. If your lungs are healthy, you might feel out of breath after exercising; however, you won't feel short of breath unless your lungs aren't operating at full capacity.

Deep breathing for a lung cleanse that starts in the diaphragm

If your lungs are healthy, breathing comes naturally as your diaphragm fills them with oxygen and then releases carbon dioxide back out as you exhale. Healthy lungs are "springy," but over time may lose their ability to expel all of the air out. Eventually, there's less room for the diaphragm to bring in new oxygen, and the body turns to alternatives for breathing, which results in lower oxygen levels. Breathing exercises get rid of stale air that's trapped inside the lungs and increases oxygen levels, getting the diaphragm back on the right track.

The American Lung Association recommends two breathing exercises to help get your diaphragm into shape. Though they seem simple, it takes a while to do them well enough to get optimal results. For the first exercise, you inhale through your nose as deep as you can, then you exhale through pursed lips -- like you're puckering up for a kiss -- letting the breath out all the way. When you feel there's no more breath to let out, keep going until you can't go any further.

The idea is to help your diaphragm release stagnant air, so make sure that you breathe out two to three times longer than it took to inhale. The second exercise involves your belly. Lie flat on the bed or floor with your hands resting on your tummy. Keep your neck and shoulders relaxed, so your diaphragm is doing the work. Watch your stomach rise as your lungs fill with air, then let the air out for as long as you can. Do each exercise daily for up to 10 minutes to make room for new oxygen in your diaphragm.

Like a Breath of Fresh Air

A lung cleanse may sound like an intimidating prospect at first. However, it becomes part of the ritual when you begin to work on daily practices that ensure a better environment for healthy breathing. Vacuum, dust, and add a few houseplants to make the air inside inviting. Replace cereal or toast each morning with a smoothy that stimulates the lungs. It's a matter of habit. Exercise also is one of those things that we put off. Go ahead and start to exercise. Soon, it will become part of your daily routine. Your lungs will thank you for taking care of their health by providing you with plenty of oxygen, like a breath of fresh air, to fuel your day.

Trouble breathing may be a sign of a serious medical problem. If you are concerned about your lung health, contact your doctor. This article is for information only, not medical advice.

Colon Cleanse Recipe: Get Moving in 2019

If there’s one thing all humans have in common, it’s that everyone poops. And, if you’re human, you’re probably going to experience the occasional bout of constipation. A colon cleanse recipe might sound like a recipe for disaster, but constipation can make you feel slow and sluggish like you’re carrying around extra weight. A colon cleanse can help “move things along” so you can start feeling better faster.

There is no perfect formula, no magic bullet, and no one right colon cleanse recipe that will reduce or even cure your constipation. However, it is possible that using a colon cleanse recipe will help get your digestive tract back on schedule and reduce the chances that the constipation will recur. While these colon cleanse recipes aim to aid digestion, they are not a substitution for medical advice and you should, of course, consult your doctor before trying any kind of colon cleanse.

What Is a Colon Cleanse?

The primary function of your colon is to cleanse your body, ridding it of all of the solid waste you produce. Sounds simple. However, there are those who believe that, from time to time, the colon itself could benefit from a cleanse. Some people think that your colon cannot eliminate all the waste your body produces and this waste gathers in the colon. That results in toxins accumulating in your body. By cleansing the accumulated waste from the colon, you flush the toxins from your body, improving your health and helping your colon function more efficiently.

A common colon cleansing method is through a colonic. In this method, you flush large amounts of water through the colon. Sometimes the water can include coffee or other herbs. The water comes through a tube that you have inserted into the rectum. However, this method of colon cleansing can lead to infections, dehydration, cramping, bloating, and other side effects. It is generally not recommended by the medical community, all though there are alternative practitioners that do suggest the occasional colonic to help improve overall health.

Keep in mind, that a colon cleanse for medical purposes (such as a colonoscopy) is entirely different from a colonic. However, you usually do this type of colon cleanse with the use of medications, like laxatives. If a doctor has directed you to complete a colon cleanse in preparation for a medical procedure, discuss your concerns with your physician.

Why Would I Consider an at Home Colon Cleanse?

Unless you are under the care of a doctor, you generally will not do a colon cleanse at home for personal reasons. However, there may be times that you experience constipation. In that case, you may want to consider some at home remedies that can relieve constipation and diminish any associated pain that you might be feeling.

Doing a colon cleanse at home using a colon cleanse recipe can have some benefits. However, you should weigh the advantages against the disadvantages before proceeding and always exercise caution.

  • ingredients may already be on hand or are easy to find
  • ingredients are all natural and don’t include any pharmaceuticals
  • can experiment with timing and dosage to find what works best for you

  • no guarantee that any of these methods will work
  • physician's help may be required
  • some of the methods require you to commit to long-term lifestyle changes
  • some of these recipes aren't very tasty

At Home Colon Cleanse Methods

Not all at home methods need to involve a colon cleanse recipe. In fact, you can try some simple lifestyle changes first to see if that helps relieve your constipation. And, while exercise is, of course, recommended, none of these lifestyle changes mention this at all.

What we recommend are changes you can make, and colon cleanse recipes you can create, on your own. However, you should always check with a doctor before making any changes to your diet or lifestyle.

Dietary changes

Sometimes, the easiest way to cleanse your colon is to make some simple dietary changes. Incorporating these changes into your everyday routine may help things flow better in the end.

Drink more water

Generally, constipation is caused by being dehydrated. Even if you’re drinking water regularly, you may still be dehydrated and not realize it. When constipation strikes, drink six to eight glasses of water in a day for a few days. If you don’t want to drink so much water, try adding water-rich foods to your diet. Watermelon, lettuce, and tomatoes are great sources of water.

Try a salt cleanse

If plain old water isn’t working, try adding a little salt to your water for a saltwater flush. Add about two teaspoons to your morning glass of lukewarm water. If you can, use Himalayan sea salt, but table salt will also work. Drink the glass of salt water on an empty stomach, and you should feel results in a few minutes. While there is no scientific proof that this actually works (or even how it works), there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that it helps.

Eat more fiber

You’ve probably heard it before: eat more fiber! And, you probably know that eating fiber helps move things along. But maybe you don’t know why it works. There are actually two kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber helps keep water in the waste, making it softer and easier to pass. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your waste which helps it move through your colon faster. Foods rich in fiber include pears, avocados, raspberries, and beans.

Chia and flax seeds

Another great source of fiber, chia and flax seeds also have a fair amount of protein and omega-3 fats. That means that not only are they good for constipation relief, but they are also heart-healthy, too. They are simple to incorporate into your diet. You can sprinkle them on your yogurt or toss a few into a smoothie.

Eat your veggies

You may not like it, but Mom was right. Eating your veggies will help alleviate your constipation (among other things). Of course, leafy greens are the vegetable of choice. Spinach, kale, Brussel sprouts, and asparagus are all great choices, but not for the reasons you might think.

Green vegetables contain Chlorophyll, which helps ease constipation. The actual mechanism is not known, but some think that the Chlorophyll contains compounds that help waste pass easily through the colon.

Drink more juice

While you’ve probably considered a juice cleanse for various reasons, just drinking plain old juice can help with constipation. Juice has more fiber than water, and it also contains Vitamin C, which may also help ease constipation. Some experts recommend that you make your own juice smoothies using whole fruit or vegetable because much of the fiber is in the skin. And, this doesn’t mean doing a juice fast, or juice cleanse. You can drink juice as part of your regular diet.

Probiotics help ease constipation by bringing in not only fiber but good bacteria. While there hasn’t been a lot of studies conducted on probiotics effect on constipation, the few  on record found that waste was generally softer after introducing probiotics into the diet, making it easier to pass through the colon. Yogurt, kimchi, and pickles are all good probiotic sources. But, you can also take a supplement.

Easy Colon Cleanse Recipe for Home Use

If you’ve tried making all the necessary dietary changes and things still aren’t as fast as you’d like, a colon cleanse recipe may help with your constipation.

Cayenne pepper cleanse

Cayenne pepper is thought to aid colon cleansing by promoting saliva production. This increase in saliva helps get more water into your colon and into your waste, making it easier to pass through the colon.

In 1 cup of water, add 1/2 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1/2 tablespoon of honey and 4 tablespoons of lemon juice. Drink it and wait for the colon magic to happen.

Apple cider vinegar cleanse

For this colon cleanse recipe, make sure to use raw (or unrefined) apple cider vinegar. Raw apple cider vinegar has probiotics in it, unlike pasteurized apple cider vinegar.

Drink 1 cup of warm water mixed with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of honey.

Turmeric ginger tea cleanse

Turmeric and ginger are both thought to fight inflammation that can cause constipation. While there are few studies on how and why turmeric and ginger work, many people swear that they do reduce inflammation in their bodies.

In 5 cups of spring water, mix in 1/4 tablespoon of fresh turmeric and 2 tablespoons of grated fresh ginger. Drink the mixture and wait for your body to do its job.

Apple juice cleanse

Apples are a great source of fiber. While you could just drink the apple juice, try mixing in some chia or flax seeds for an added fiber boost.

Castor oil cleanse

Well, it probably doesn’t taste great, but there is evidence that castor oil works on constipation. Add 1 tablespoon of castor oil to 1 cup of ginger tea and drink.

Now That Things Are Moving Again

Constipation is just part of the human condition. However, there are things you can do to make it less likely to happen to begin with. A few dietary changes will help make sure you aren’t holding all your waste in. And, if that doesn’t work, a colon cleanse recipe may be just the thing you need to get things back on track.

Of course, if you suffer from chronic constipation and nothing seems to be working, you should consult your doctor. While you don’t have to have a bowel movement every day, if you find that more often than not it’s hard to go, you should consult your doctor.

21 Day Cleanse: Best Cleanse Methods & Products

running against the sunset

Intended to reshape the way you think about nutrition, a detox diet can help to provide you with nutrients to boost your energy, health, and wellness. Detoxification and cleansing diets are more popular than ever, with the 21 Day Cleanse standing out as a hot social and health trend, designed to clean the blood and eliminate harmful toxins from your system.

To help your body become healthier, a typical 21 Day Cleanse starts with a period of fasting. Following that is a strict diet of mostly fruits, vegetables, and water. However, there are many different products and methods designed to help you in your cleanse. This helps give those who are trying to get healthy a multitude of ways to do so.

How Does Detoxification Work?

A way to cleanse the body and encourage and restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself, detoxification helps to remove the impurities and toxins from important organs in your body. The liver removes impurities from the blood, processing toxins for elimination. The kidneys, intestines, lungs, and skin also help eliminate toxins.

Though somewhat controversial, many dieticians recommend a 21 day cleanse as a way to restore the body’s natural detoxification process. Although the body naturally eliminates toxins from food, medications, and the environment, when there is a build up of toxins, it is more than the body can naturally handle. Toxins can come into the body through substances we come into contact with every day. This includes pollutants in the air, heavy metals in the soil, pesticides on produce, and ingredients in processed food. With the body unable to adequately cope with this flux of toxins around us, a cleanse can be a natural way to help the body restore itself.

The Challenges and Rewards of Cleansing

Completing a 21 day cleanse means a shift in lifestyle for many people. It involves plenty of meal planning, strict self-control, and makes it nearly impossible to eat out. If you have a family, it may involve putting in extra time for meals as they likely won't be on the cleanse with you. It also may be a drain on expenses, as many of the products and food items you will be buying are fresh and often more expensive. You have to be willing to change up your “go-to” foods from chips and candy to carrots and green drinks.

However, it can open up your appetite for new healthy food options that you will be willing to keep on eating even after you complete your 21 day cleanse. Although the lack of sugars and fats may leave you feeling weak or with frequent headaches during the first week, many people have noticed striking physical changes. Many people have reported losing weight, a decreased intensity in menstrual cramps, and an overall feeling of health and liveliness.

Health Benefits of a 21 Day Cleanse

Most 21 day cleanse diets don’t just eliminate junk and unhealthy foods from your diet, but also introduce nutrient-rich foods that can help fuel your body. Fluids, fiber, fruits, and vegetables help your kidneys and liver to function better. These, in the long run, support your body’s health and wellness.

You may decide that you need to detoxify if you are experiencing excessive fatigue, irritated skin, allergies, menstrual problems, and mental confusion. These conditions may be arising due to excessive toxins in your system.

Ultimately, what detoxification does is cleanse the blood by removing impurities through the liver, skin, kidneys, lungs, intestines, and lymphatic system. Other ways your body can benefit from detoxification are listed below:

  • Stimulating your liver to detoxify while resting the organs through fasting
  • Helping to improve energy levels and mood
  • Eliminating and purging toxins through the intestines, kidneys, and skin
  • Improving circulation of the blood
  • Refueling your body with healthy nutrients
  • Helping to maintain consistent blood sugar levels
  • Weight loss management

Considerations Before Beginning Your Cleanse

Scientific evidence does not currently support the effectiveness of a cleansing diet as there are a lack of studies and supporting evidence. We recommend that you consult a medical professional before beginning a cleanse or any other major change in your diet. Mention any medical conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, or if you take any medications affecting blood sugar levels.

However, a healthy cleanse program is designed to provide the best nutrients and fuel for your body. This is all intended to help your body complete its natural detoxification processes. It is not about starving yourself or going on a strict liquids diet. It is about turning your attention to foods that are healthier and easier for your body to digest.

Types of Cleanses

During the fasting stage, before your cleanse, it is recommended to stay away from unhealthy or difficult to digest foods. These include dairy, sugar, caffeine, processed foods, and alcohol. It is important to lighten up your toxin load and any obstacles to your body’s healing process. It also may help to eliminate any chemical-based products in your house. You can find chemicals in cleaners, deodorants, or shampoos. Try to use natural alternatives in their place.

There are many different types of detox diets, whether you choose to create your own cleanse or buy an already designed kit. Some detox diets may include:

  • Organically grown fruits and vegetables detox
  • Smoothie and juice cleanse
  • Sugar detox
  • Hypoallergenic detox

Other types of detoxification include dry-brushing your skin to remove toxins through your pores, light exercising such as yoga or jump-roping, taking plenty of vitamin C to help the liver produce the compound glutathione to drive away toxins, and going to a sauna to sweat away impurities.

A typical 21 day cleanse involves eating a solid meal each day with two liquid meals. Liquid meals can include freshly made juice, smoothies, or soup. The meals you eat should be easy to digest, avoiding allergens such as peanuts, eggs, soy, or tomatoes. To avoid high sodium levels, preparing your own meals and soup can be a healthier alternative.
