If there’s one thing all humans have in common, it’s that everyone poops. And, if you’re human, you’re probably going to experience the occasional bout of constipation. A colon cleanse recipe might sound like a recipe for disaster, but constipation can make you feel slow and sluggish like you’re carrying around extra weight. A colon cleanse can help “move things along” so you can start feeling better faster.

There is no perfect formula, no magic bullet, and no one right colon cleanse recipe that will reduce or even cure your constipation. However, it is possible that using a colon cleanse recipe will help get your digestive tract back on schedule and reduce the chances that the constipation will recur. While these colon cleanse recipes aim to aid digestion, they are not a substitution for medical advice and you should, of course, consult your doctor before trying any kind of colon cleanse.

What Is a Colon Cleanse?

The primary function of your colon is to cleanse your body, ridding it of all of the solid waste you produce. Sounds simple. However, there are those who believe that, from time to time, the colon itself could benefit from a cleanse. Some people think that your colon cannot eliminate all the waste your body produces and this waste gathers in the colon. That results in toxins accumulating in your body. By cleansing the accumulated waste from the colon, you flush the toxins from your body, improving your health and helping your colon function more efficiently.

A common colon cleansing method is through a colonic. In this method, you flush large amounts of water through the colon. Sometimes the water can include coffee or other herbs. The water comes through a tube that you have inserted into the rectum. However, this method of colon cleansing can lead to infections, dehydration, cramping, bloating, and other side effects. It is generally not recommended by the medical community, all though there are alternative practitioners that do suggest the occasional colonic to help improve overall health.

Keep in mind, that a colon cleanse for medical purposes (such as a colonoscopy) is entirely different from a colonic. However, you usually do this type of colon cleanse with the use of medications, like laxatives. If a doctor has directed you to complete a colon cleanse in preparation for a medical procedure, discuss your concerns with your physician.

Why Would I Consider an at Home Colon Cleanse?

Unless you are under the care of a doctor, you generally will not do a colon cleanse at home for personal reasons. However, there may be times that you experience constipation. In that case, you may want to consider some at home remedies that can relieve constipation and diminish any associated pain that you might be feeling.

Doing a colon cleanse at home using a colon cleanse recipe can have some benefits. However, you should weigh the advantages against the disadvantages before proceeding and always exercise caution.

At Home Colon Cleanse Methods

Not all at home methods need to involve a colon cleanse recipe. In fact, you can try some simple lifestyle changes first to see if that helps relieve your constipation. And, while exercise is, of course, recommended, none of these lifestyle changes mention this at all.

What we recommend are changes you can make, and colon cleanse recipes you can create, on your own. However, you should always check with a doctor before making any changes to your diet or lifestyle.

Sometimes, the easiest way to cleanse your colon is to make some simple dietary changes. Incorporating these changes into your everyday routine may help things flow better in the end.

Drink more water

Generally, constipation is caused by being dehydrated. Even if you’re drinking water regularly, you may still be dehydrated and not realize it. When constipation strikes, drink six to eight glasses of water in a day for a few days. If you don’t want to drink so much water, try adding water-rich foods to your diet. Watermelon, lettuce, and tomatoes are great sources of water.

Try a salt cleanse

If plain old water isn’t working, try adding a little salt to your water for a saltwater flush. Add about two teaspoons to your morning glass of lukewarm water. If you can, use Himalayan sea salt, but table salt will also work. Drink the glass of salt water on an empty stomach, and you should feel results in a few minutes. While there is no scientific proof that this actually works (or even how it works), there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that it helps.

Eat more fiber

You’ve probably heard it before: eat more fiber! And, you probably know that eating fiber helps move things along. But maybe you don’t know why it works. There are actually two kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber helps keep water in the waste, making it softer and easier to pass. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to your waste which helps it move through your colon faster. Foods rich in fiber include pears, avocados, raspberries, and beans.

Chia and flax seeds

Another great source of fiber, chia and flax seeds also have a fair amount of protein and omega-3 fats. That means that not only are they good for constipation relief, but they are also heart-healthy, too. They are simple to incorporate into your diet. You can sprinkle them on your yogurt or toss a few into a smoothie.

Eat your veggies

You may not like it, but Mom was right. Eating your veggies will help alleviate your constipation (among other things). Of course, leafy greens are the vegetable of choice. Spinach, kale, Brussel sprouts, and asparagus are all great choices, but not for the reasons you might think.

Green vegetables contain Chlorophyll, which helps ease constipation. The actual mechanism is not known, but some think that the Chlorophyll contains compounds that help waste pass easily through the colon.

Drink more juice

While you’ve probably considered a juice cleanse for various reasons, just drinking plain old juice can help with constipation. Juice has more fiber than water, and it also contains Vitamin C, which may also help ease constipation. Some experts recommend that you make your own juice smoothies using whole fruit or vegetable because much of the fiber is in the skin. And, this doesn’t mean doing a juice fast, or juice cleanse. You can drink juice as part of your regular diet.

Probiotics

Probiotics help ease constipation by bringing in not only fiber but good bacteria. While there hasn’t been a lot of studies conducted on probiotics effect on constipation, the few  on record found that waste was generally softer after introducing probiotics into the diet, making it easier to pass through the colon. Yogurt, kimchi, and pickles are all good probiotic sources. But, you can also take a supplement.

Easy Colon Cleanse Recipe for Home Use

If you’ve tried making all the necessary dietary changes and things still aren’t as fast as you’d like, a colon cleanse recipe may help with your constipation.

Cayenne pepper cleanse

Cayenne pepper is thought to aid colon cleansing by promoting saliva production. This increase in saliva helps get more water into your colon and into your waste, making it easier to pass through the colon.

In 1 cup of water, add 1/2 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1/2 tablespoon of honey and 4 tablespoons of lemon juice. Drink it and wait for the colon magic to happen.

Apple cider vinegar cleanse

For this colon cleanse recipe, make sure to use raw (or unrefined) apple cider vinegar. Raw apple cider vinegar has probiotics in it, unlike pasteurized apple cider vinegar.

Drink 1 cup of warm water mixed with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of honey.

Turmeric ginger tea cleanse

Turmeric and ginger are both thought to fight inflammation that can cause constipation. While there are few studies on how and why turmeric and ginger work, many people swear that they do reduce inflammation in their bodies.

In 5 cups of spring water, mix in 1/4 tablespoon of fresh turmeric and 2 tablespoons of grated fresh ginger. Drink the mixture and wait for your body to do its job.

Apple juice cleanse

Apples are a great source of fiber. While you could just drink the apple juice, try mixing in some chia or flax seeds for an added fiber boost.

Castor oil cleanse

Well, it probably doesn’t taste great, but there is evidence that castor oil works on constipation. Add 1 tablespoon of castor oil to 1 cup of ginger tea and drink.

Constipation is just part of the human condition. However, there are things you can do to make it less likely to happen to begin with. A few dietary changes will help make sure you aren’t holding all your waste in. And, if that doesn’t work, a colon cleanse recipe may be just the thing you need to get things back on track.

Of course, if you suffer from chronic constipation and nothing seems to be working, you should consult your doctor. While you don’t have to have a bowel movement every day, if you find that more often than not it’s hard to go, you should consult your doctor.
